Alex and Luke went back to school

Posted on March 9th, 2010 in ontario by alex

Yesterday we had the absolute pleasure of going back to school, but this time around we weren’t the students, we were the guest speakers! Here’s how it all went down:

About a week ago a girl named Katie (@katie_m_thomas) had to present a Hot Topic to her Social Media PR class at Humber College. She presented the alexandluke project – can you believe it!? The entire class sent us tweets inviting us into Humber to meet with them. We, of course, said yes! So we made a little presentation, and off we went to school.

We met with two different groups of students and spent two hours with each group presenting our project and picking their brains. We got some very positive feedback from them, and they gave us a lot of new ideas. These students are amazing – they have some great blogs themselves which you can find if you poke around on twitter using the hash tag #HumberPR.

Meeting these students was very useful for us, as we have no background in PR or any formal education in Social Media, so they offered us their expertise, which was great. But the best part of visiting Humber was that it represented exactly the sort of thing we hope this experiment will yield all over North America…

The alexandluke project randomly reached one person over the internet. That person told a group of people about it. We found out about it and very quickly an online relationship formed. Within days that online relationship turned into about 60 real life personal relationships when we stepped onto campus. How incredible is that? Days like yesterday tell us the experiment is working.

Thank you to all of the students that attended class – we know you are really busy with midterms, and we so appreciate all of your comments and questions and offers to stay with you! @chefdeafjeff, we would love it if YOU could teach Alex how to ski or snowboard if we make it up North on the 21st! And North Bay girl (sorry, we missed your name) – we would love to go to that place you told us about where Champlain portaged!

At the end of class we asked the students to draw on a piece of paper that we will be turning into a sticker on our car. We have scanned it into the computer and are sending it off to Zazzle to have it printed. Now Humber will be with us wherever we go! If you ever see our car, look for the Humber sticker – it has all of their twitter names on there, so you will be able to get in touch with these amazing students and see what they are all up to in Toronto! Or, take a look at the scan below:

Thanks again to @MichaelCayley for having us in your classes! We had the best time.

Should we drive East, West, or North first?

Posted on March 8th, 2010 in vote by alex and luke

The big day is rapidly approaching so we have posted our very first directional vote!  On March 20th we will be departing Toronto in the late afternoon and we don’t even know which way we are turning out of the parking lot yet!

This is where you come in… We are giving you three options (East, West, or North) and each option comes with a general itinerary of things we will plan to see and do.  Read about what will be involved with each direction and then decide which way you think we should go first!

WEST

If we head West, we will be stopping in Guelph on our first night and attempting the old University of Guelph tradition of painting Old Jeremiah, an old British Naval cannon that sits in the heart of the campus.  We will have to stay up all night to do it, and might have to battle it out with other eager students who have their mind set on painting the cannon themselves.

Day Two would take us to London, Ontario where we will experience the city where Alex lived for four years during her undergrad.  We could tour Labatt Brewery, visit Museum London, take in some nightlife on the strip, hang out with UWO students, or maybe even audit a class or two.  What we do in London will be put to a vote.

Day Three would take us to Thedford where we would have the unique opportunity of observing Tundra Swans on one of the stops along their migration route.

And then we would head to Canada’s most southern point, Pelee Island on Day Four and take in the sights.

If you like the sound of this, vote West.

EAST

Our first night would be spent in Kingston, looking for a place to stay.  Our attempts at finding lodgings could involve befriending Queens University students and hoping they have a couch to crash on, or we could spend the night at a haunted hotel, The Rosemount.

On Day Two and Three we will explore our nation’s capital, Ottawa, Ontario.  In Ottawa we will do all of the touristy things people like to do, like visit Parliament, the Rideau Canal and the National Gallery.

Day Four will take us to the Gatineau Hills in the province of Quebec where we will take in some of Canada’s natural splendor.

If you like the sound of this, vote East.

NORTH

The final choice takes us up North, and the itinerary is jam-packed.  We will spend the first night in Collingwood, and the next day will have us on Blue Mountain where Alex will face her childhood fear and ride a chairlift for the first time in her life!  Then Luke will either give her a snowboarding lesson or a skiing lesson (we’ll put that choice in your hands with a vote).

Day Two will take us to Wasaga Beach where (provided we are still invited) we will co-host a radio show with Jeremy Johns at The Beach 97.7!

Day Three we will head up to North Bay where we will stay with Luke’s relatives and babysit one our loyal follower’s kids for the night.  We will introduce them (and you) to the Truppets, traveling puppets who will be going all over North America with us.

And finally on Day Four we will have the unique opportunity to run a General Store in Stonecliffe, Ontario for the day!

If you like the sound of this, vote North.

This poll will close on the afternoon of March 20th, departure day.  Make sure you have your say and vote up there on the top right!

Or, If you are on Twitter you can vote by typing any of the hashtags below in your twitter stream:

#NORTHalexluke
#EASTalexluke
#WESTalexluke

We actually made it easier for you, just click any of the hashtags above and a tweet will automatically be generated!

Sticker Application – The Movie

Posted on March 7th, 2010 in YouTube by luke

It is Oscar night! Because of this we felt it an appropriate time to release a short movie of our own titled “Sticker Application”, and by short movie we mean short YouTube video with little to no plot. That said, the performances are sure to win awards in the future. Alex’s depiction of Luke’s best friend is very believable, and Luke’s take on what it’s like being 25 with a beard is so accurate it’s shocking.

Thanks to Steph Porter, Sean Dennis, Kelly Dennis, and Gowalla for the stickers we applied in the video.

Statistics

Posted on March 6th, 2010 in ontario, stats by alex and luke

Neither of us are statisticians, but we may need to make friends with one after our experiment is over to help us go over all of the data we will be keeping track of after we depart.

We will be tracking absolutely everything we can think of (and we mean everything that we can think of), on a page that we will be launching soon here at:
www.alexandluke.com/statistics.

Some of our statistics will be team statistics and some will be individual. You can rest assured that our competitive natures will turn any of the individual statistics into mild-moderate competitions.

Suggest anything! From coffees consumed, headaches had, poops conducted in diners, milliliters of diet coke consumed, number of pie competitions entered, number of fights, anything!

But, before we can launch this page we want your suggestions as to what we should keep track of. Leave a comment in the comments section below, send us an e-mail a:t alexandlukedotcom@gmail.com, tweet at us @alexandluke, or write us a note on our facebook fan page www.facebook.com/alexandlukedotcom.

If you have been reluctant about commenting on a post up until now, place that reluctancy aside and give us some things to keep track of.

Our Uniform: Matching Jumpsuits

Posted on March 4th, 2010 in vote by luke

We asked, and you answered. The final tally shows 46% in favour of Matching Jumpsuits, 39% in favour of Blue Jays Plaid 15% in favour of Scout’s Uniform, so matching jumpsuits it shall be! We will be heading out first thing in the morning in the search for the perfect jumpsuit, which shall swiftly be sent off to be personalized. Now we just have to pick our colours! Thoughts?

Thank you to Bailey and Matt for your suggestions – they were very creative, and we actually voted for them over our own suggestion! Maybe we will have to mix in some badges and Jays hats for good measure.

Stay tuned to see the final outfit come together!

Thanks again for voting everyone!

People Pledged, We Designed

Posted on March 3rd, 2010 in Pledges, photoshop by alex and luke

We are habitually blown away by the support we receive from our family, friends, and perfect strangers.

Thank you for visiting the site, commenting, tweeting, telling people, and pledging money towards our project.

We have designed the second batch of stickers for people who have done a sticker pledge this week (our first batch can be seen here).

Here is a sample of some of the stickers that will be sent to the bumper-sticker printing factory tomorrow.

We have had a vision since september of Burt Reynolds (our car’s name to any new readers) covered in a mosaic of different pictures that represent the people who have pledged to the project. And, we hope that when we pull back into Toronto when this trip is over that every square inch of the car will be covered in stickers that remind us of places we have been, people we have met, experiences we have had, and the support we have felt.

Thanks again,

We Were Nicely Attacked on Twitter Today

Posted on March 1st, 2010 in Twitter by alex and luke

We have a new friend (we think?) named Kate that was nice enough to give a presentation (about us!) to her PR class at Humber today that resulted in the entire class sending us messages on Twitter from their computer lab! They e-peer-pressured* us to come speak to their class next week!

We were so thrilled to log on to Twitter and see this on our homepage:

Congratulations Humber, you have influenced the alexandluke project in the exact manner we hope to be influenced on a daily basis over the course of our trip.

We are so excited to visit Humber next week, and you readers should be to! We hope to broadcast our visit with the students on alexandluke.com live, but at the very least we will put together a montage of some very smart people telling us how great/terrible our idea is (this one won’t be set to techno).

As a special thanks to Kate (who lives on Twitter here) for spreading the word on our project, we will be sending her a postcard from the region of her choice on our trip!

* I think we just made up a new buzzword with that e-peer-pressure thing. Guess what? www.epeerpressure.com is still up for grabs – thank us later

Uniform: VOTE->

Posted on February 25th, 2010 in YouTube, vote by alex and luke

We are asking that all alexandluke.com fans take the time to vote on our uniform. You can do so by looking at the righthand side of the site and choosing the option that best suits you.

This is not a decision for you to take lightly. We will be wearing this uniform in videos that we make all over North America.

Please watch the video to view our professionally done artist’s renditions:

After you are done watching the video, please vote! And, tell your friends to vote! And, go to an internet cafe and log onto every computer and vote so your option has a better chance of winning! And, make every computer in the internet cafe’s homepage alexandluke.com!

Thanks,

Alex and Luke and a Stereo

Posted on February 24th, 2010 in ontario by luke

Our car is named Burt Reynolds. The windows of the car are his eyes, the exhaust is his rear end, the engine is his heart, the windshield wipers are his his eyelashes, and the wheels are his legs. While it may be easy to mistake the car’s horn as his voicebox (it’s not, it’s actually his middle finger being thrust towards you, or a friendly wave of his hand depending on the context), Burt’s voicebox is the stereo and speakers that live inside him, and Alex and I are the brain that controls what he recounts or sings.

Firmly placing this metaphor aside, the stereo is a big part of our trip. It’s going to be playing us music, reading us books, delivering us news, teaching us languages, giving us glimpses into local culture, and hopefully warning us of any weather patterns or ghost attacks to be weary of in the cities we are approaching.

To take advantage of the capabilities of Burt’s stereo we are:
-Ramping up our Podcast subscriptions.
-Doubling our Audible.com Digital Book Plan
-Researching what AM or FM station we should tune into in different regions
-Moving our old CDs onto our computers
-Buying new music to listen to on the road, and…
-Asking for your help!!

We need to find out about more bands, more podcasts, and more radio stations!

We would love to hear any of your suggestions,

alex and luke.

PS:
Alternatively, you can send us a mixCD (Burt doesn’t have a cassette player or we would ask for a tape)
