Favourite Follower Friday

Posted on April 30th, 2010 in Massachusetts by alex and luke

We are pleased to introduce a new weekly feature on alexandluke.com: Favourite Follower Friday. If you are on Twitter you may know that every Friday there is something called “Follow Friday” where people recommend people to follow on Twitter. Building on this concept once a week we will highlight someone from the past week who we met, interacted with, or who influenced the alexandluke.com project and share the story.

Our favourite follower from this past week is Jack Chafe.

When we pulled into Boston, Massachusetts 5 days ago we parked our car on Beacon Street just south of Mass Ave. Our car, Burt Reynolds stands out on any street and on Sunday April 25th Jack Chafe walked past Burt on his walk home from optometry school.

Jack is a fan of alexandluke.com on Facebook so he recognized the car immediately. He rushed home to send us an e-mail informing us he lived just 5 minutes away from where the car was parked. A couple of e-mails and phone calls later, Jack showed up at the apartment where we were staying to join us for a drink.

Luke and Jack lived together 4 years ago in Antigonish, Nova Scotia and had not seen each other for a long time. Jack had no idea we had made it to Boston (and Luke had no idea Jack was even living in Boston) until he saw our car. It is the pure happenstance behind this encounter that makes it our favourite of the week!

Thanks Jack Chafe for being our first Favourite Follower!

Rhode Island barrrrrrrrely wins!

Posted on April 29th, 2010 in Rhode Island by luke

From a percentage perspective Vermont tied Rhode Island, which had our resident statistician doing backflips!
Website Vote:
Vermont: 34%
Rhode Island: 36%
New York: 24%
Connecticut: 6%

Twitter Vote:
Vermont: 39%
Rhode Island: 37%
New York: 18%
Connecticut: 6%

We are excited to be heading to Rhode Island, and are excited to be travelling to Vermont in a potentially nicer climate! Big thanks to @vermonttourism for their efforts to get us to the state! Hopefully soon!

We will leave you with this fact:
alexandluke.com travelling to Rhode Island came down to under 5 votes.

Off we go!

Directional Vote – The Best One Yet! Win an alexandluke.com shirt! Tell Your Friends!

Posted on April 28th, 2010 in Massachusetts, vote by alex and luke

At alexandluke.com we like to be the first people in the world to do things. We are the first people in the world to travel all of Upper North America (UNA) based on the suggestions of Twitter and Facebook, and in the current vote on alexandluke.com we are hosting the first four-way competition between: New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont to take place in the history of the world.

In the interest of fueling the intensity behind the vote between the four states we are reluctantly publishing some of the things we heard the states say about one another:

-We overheard Connecticut tell New York that Rhode Island is the worst neighbour and then this quote: “Rhode Island! Ha! More like Rhode small piece of dirt on the coastline that everyone forgets about”. The two states then high fived.

-Vermont accidentally texted us instead of Manitoba and although we are uncomfortable with publishing the message we can say that what VT had to say about coastal states was demonstrative of a land-locked-supremacist.

-We hung out with Rhode Island last night at a speak easy and he told us that Vermont was big, too mountainy, impersonal, and that both Ben and Jerry are “jerk faces”.

-Lastly, New York told us straight up that it was the only state worth visiting, and it thinks that its competitions’ membership to the “New England Club” is cute (there was heavy sarcasm in this point).

We hate publishing that stuff, but we felt it our duty to get all the facts out before the vote launches.

Laundromat Song

Posted on April 27th, 2010 in Newfoundland, YouTube, favourites by alex

I just found this old footage that we took while waiting for our clothes to finish washing in a laundromat in the middle of nowhere. They were some of the slowest machines I’ve ever encountered, and we had three loads to do! To pass the time, we made up songs to the beat of the washer (rarely an hour goes by that one of us isn’t making up a song about what we are doing). I forgot this particular song had been recorded, but when I came across it, I decided to make a music video out of it – enjoy!
