We’ve been wanting to create this video since we ended our road-trip in December. This is the order in which we visited every State, Province, and Territory in Canada and the United States as controlled by YOU, the followers of alexandluke.com.

This Friday the Favourite Follower award goes to two people who we did not meet because of the internet. It wasn’t the power of twitter this time – nope, it was something a lot more basic than that – it was simply our colourful car, which was parked outside of a bbq restaurant in Birmingham Alabama. We were having lunch with al.com when suddenly a girl named Collin and a boy named Sam marched into the restaurant determined to figure out the identity of the traveling Canadians with the crazy car. Apparently we weren’t hard to spot because they found us immediately. In fact, we were doing an interview with al.com when they approached us so they actually made it into the al.com interview video (about half way through), which can be watched below…

If you watched the al.com video, you will have seen Collin and Sam inviting us out to swim in a river… we of course took them up on it! Now check out the video we made below to see what it was like swimming in an Alabama river. Not that he would ever see this, but I want to thank musician David Bazan, as I used one of his songs to accompany the video clips – we don’t usually do that, but in this case we thought it was appropriate because when we got in Collin and Sam’s car, they were listening to David Bazan and we were thrilled because he is one of our favourite artists! Also, something tells me he wouldn’t mind too much…
So for their spontaneity and generosity, and for not making us eat bbq again (yay for Indian food in Birmingham!) Collin and Sam are our Favourite Followers of the Week!
We at alexandluke.com are an above-average petroleum consumer. We are driving through every State, Province, and Territory in the USA and Canada and while our VW rabbit is a very fuel-efficient car, on a long day of driving we can consume 115+ Liters (30+ Gallons) of gasoline.
When we pull over for gas there is almost always the option to fill up our tank at a bp gas station. There are three schools of thought about what we should be doing when faced with this decision:
1) Purchase your gasoline from the bp gas station. The dollars you are spending are helping to fund the clean-up effort in the Gulf Coast and eventually will help the people and businesses affected by the disaster.
2) Boycott bp. The dollars you are spending are supporting a socially irresponsible company that through its neglect has caused the biggest oil spill in American history.
3) Purchase your gasoline from bp, or not. Regardless of where you are spending your dollars you are supporting big oil. Yes, bp is responsible for the oil spill. But, this disaster was caused by our society’s reliance on oil. If you really want to help, rely less on oil.
One of the negative aspects of alexandluke.com is that we do consume a lot of oil. If we had the means to convert our car to be more environmentally friendly we would, but the reality is that we don’t. If any eccentric millionaires wish to help us out in this regard, let us know. Until then, we will continue to be purchasing an above-average amount of gasoline. What should we do? What would you do? I am writing this post from Alabama’s gulf coast. The fingers that typed this message picked up oil balls on the shores of Orange Beach national park this morning. We are looking for ways to help out while we are in the gulf coast, if you have any ideas about what we can do to help in this area let us know in the comments below.

We will be leaving Florida via the coast on Sunday July 4th and will be looking for a great city to spend our first ever Independence day in the United States.
This vote can hold serious consequences. It’s our goal to travel to every State, Province, and Territory in the US and Canada! But, that doesn’t necessarily mean that we will be spending time in all of the States and Provinces we would like to! You can vote us through States, and this week’s vote has the potential to have us drive through two states, never to return.
If you are a fan of us visiting every state and thoroughly exploring them, vote Alabama! Louisiana and Mississippi will be up on future votes.
If you want us to move West as quickly as possible, vote Louisiana (and in the process make us ‘skip’ Alabama and Mississippi).
If you don’t care about Alabama, vote Mississippi.
The gulf coast has had a pretty rough time with the oil spill, as soon as we find out where we are voted to we will be contacting organizations in the area to see if we can lend some hands and help out.
