*Please note this video is not yet in HD – the internet is not so cooperative when floating in the middle of the Mediterranean (fair enough), but it will be available in HD in the coming weeks. Thanks for your patience!

Only in Yellowknife…

can you drive on an ice road in a stretch limousine!!! Check out this amazing video!

Big thanks to Arctic Executive Limousines in Yellowknife for taking us on the ride of a lifetime! We should note that they also do all of the regular limo services like airport pickups and special events, but lets be honest – if you find yourself in Yellowknife requiring a limousine, we both know you’re not going to miss out on driving on an ICE ROAD while you’re there!!! SO COOL!

If… actually scratch that… WHEN you find yourself in Yellowknife we highly recommend hopping on a sightseeing helicopter ride with Trinity Helicopters! But for now – you can take our tour with us by watching this video!

Thanks to Trinity Helicopters for this unforgettable ride!

A night at Aurora Village

Posted on April 1st, 2011 in favourites,North,Northwest Territories,YouTube by alex and luke

Aurora Village, just outside of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, is THE premier destination to view the spectacular and mysterious Aurora Borealis (northern lights) worldwide, and we had the good fortune of visiting the village on three different occasions during our stay. With traditional tipis, wood burning stoves, outdoor heated chairs, a main lodge, and a beautiful and remote setting, Aurora Village was one of our most favourite visits in Yellowknife. People flock here from all over the world to take advantage of the incredible views. Here’s a little taste of what its like at night! (They also have daytime activities – stay tuned for those!)

Traditional Dene Hand Games

Posted on March 30th, 2011 in favourites,North,Northwest Territories,YouTube by alex and luke

This was one of the most incredible things we have witnessed during our travels – it’s part of the Annual Dene Hand Games Championships, held in Behchoko, a community about an hour from Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. Watch and listen to the powerful drums and the energy of the players as they participate in a tradition that is thousands of years old.

A big thanks to North Star Adventures for taking us out there. We felt like we were in very good hands with Joe – his website does tell us he has 50 000 years of experience after all! Check it out for yourself!

A seriously northern flight.

Posted on March 20th, 2011 in favourites,North,Northwest Territories by alex

Last Wednesday we set off from Ottawa Ontario for Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, but we didn’t just take any flight… we took a Canadian North flight, which took us up to Nunavut and then across the Canadian frozen tundra to the Northwest Territories in the west. We could not have had a better day for flying, and we were able to see the icy, snowy, barren ground beneath us the entire day.

We made two brief stops along the way – the first in Iqaluit (which is a place we had the pleasure of exploring last November), the second in Rankin Inlet (our first time there). Both of these communities in Canada’s newest Territory of Nunavut are set amongst the most spectacularly open treeless tundra, and flying in and out of all three airports was an experience we will never forget.

This video captures all three legs of our flight. If you ever have the chance to fly over the north, this is what you have to look forward to.

Big thanks to Canadian North (who supplied us with meals on all three flights – Unheard of!!!)

Chefs for a day! We made Moroccan Salmon Pasta with Argan Oil

Posted on February 20th, 2011 in favourites,New Hampshire,The Balsams,Uncategorized,YouTube by alex and luke

I insist that you watch this video, then head out and pick up all of the ingredients, including the precious and delicious Argan Oil from Morocco, and recreate the dish for yourself (and then invite us over). You WILL NOT regret it. This is the most marvellously fresh, interesting, and mouthwatering pasta dish we have ever had, and the best part? We made it ourselves (with some guidance from The BALSAMS Executive Chef Joshua Berry of course)!!! Delicious!
