We were driving through thick Chicago traffic yesterday afternoon, heading south on the 55 out of the city. For some reason we seem to always travel during rush hour, though something tells me we are far less bothered by the slow pace than the average commuter. After all, when we are driving in Burt Reynolds we are technically home AND at work all at the same time. And lately we have not just been tolerating our time in traffic, but actually enjoying it because of our new habit of listening to audio books in the car. The book we just started listening to yesterday is Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point. If you are one of the three people out there that is unfamiliar with Malcolm Gladwell and his series of clever books about human behaviour and the social sciences, The Tipping Point deals a lot with the social phenomenon of Word-of-Mouth.
So there we are, nudging along in Chicago traffic, completely engrossed in the words of Gladwell as he talks about how big ideas are often spread because of the acts of only a small handful of people, when suddenly we hear a light honk from the lane to our left. The traffic is pretty much stop and go at this point, so we were both able to look left and see a huge smiling face beaming at us from the big white SUV that was now next to our stopped car. We rolled down the window, and to our delight, the following conversation took place:
Guy: Hey, I just heard about you! Are you Alex and Luke?
A&L: Ya! Hi there!
Guy: This is so crazy, I just heard about you at Starbucks in Wisconsin and now here you are next to my car in Illinois!
A&L: No Way! Get outta here!”
Guy: Ya -I’m doing the same sort of thing as you – traveling to all 50 states!
A&L: No way!!!! Get OUTTA here! Do you have a website?
Guy: Ya its artofchris.com!
A&L: Amazing! We will look you up right now!
Guy: Safe travels guys!
A&L: You too!
Guy: (his lane starts moving)
Luke: Whoa can you believe the chances of that?
Alex: Holy boloney!
Luke: Holy macaroli!
Alex: Holy canoli!
Luke: Holy macaroli!
Alex: Its Holy macaroni!
Luke: I don’t like macaroni…
So after chatting back and forth on each others facebook fan page walls this afternoon, it turns out that Chris (who is from California) was in the same Starbucks in Wisconsin on Thursday that we were in on Monday. The only reason we went to that particular Starbucks was because we were sent there by our Green Bay host Peggy (who we met online) because her friend Morgan (who once got to do some viewer correspondence for the Ellen Show) worked there and Peggy thought we would enjoy meeting Morgan. So we met Morgan who must have met Chris yesterday morning while she was at work, and they must have exchanged stories, and she must have then told Chris about us. He later confessed that he was initially planning on looking us up, but then had forgotten about it until he saw our car on the highway and said hello!!!
Isn’t that amazing? And all the while, we were listening to Malcolm Gladwell discuss how information can spread so far and wide with just a few key people.
So this week for Favourite Follower Friday, we have to pick all three of the key influencers who contributed to one of the neatest moments of the trip so far.
Peggy, Morgan, and Chris – you are our Favourite Follower Friday Trifecta! Congratulations!!!
