We thought we would be driving to Minnesota for sure when we started on our drive to Des Moines this morning, but low and behold the Iowa voters staged a massive comeback on the last stretch of highway and it looks like we are staying put!

So this brings us to Round One of The Final States Showdown! This round is Iowa vs Minnesota and (pay extra attention here) the loser will merely be driven through, while the winner will have our full, undivided attention for a number of days. I know that sounds harsh, but time is ticking, and we have to keep our pace up on the home stretch of the last six states so that we can get ourselves back to Canada before we are in danger of getting in trouble with customs, AND so that we can find ourselves way up in the Canadian territories and back again before they completely freeze over.

So what will it be? A few days in Iowa, or a few days in Minnesota??? Do you want us to visit the Mall of America (Minnesota), or the birthplace of Ashton Kutcher (Iowa)? As always, its up to you!

We have spent the last couple of days in Kansas. While walking to Starbucks we were terribly surprised when the Wicked Witch (from the Wizard of Oz) appeared before us. She informed us of three things:

1. She was a really big fan and wanted to see more videos with the skybear in it.
2. She was taking over the next directional vote, and in this vote visitors to alexandluke.com will vote on which State should be fed to the sharks.
3. She was selling chocolate bars to raise money for her daughters lacrosse team.

Uninterested in funding the Lacrosse team, Alex adressed the second point:
Alex: People will vote on which state should be fed to the what?
Wicked Witch: TO THE SHARKS!!!!

Then the Witch pulled back a curtain showing Nebraska, Iowa, and Colorado all resting on stacks of 24 pieces of the yellow brick road. We managed to take a picture and attached it above.

The witch then went on to explain that she set up a magical vote, where every time a State receives a vote one of the pieces of the yellow brick road disappears below it! Once all of the bricks disappear, that State will be consumed by Sharks and will not be visited on this directional vote (however, it may still be regurgitated for future votes).

She then instructed us to place a vote, below:

She also told us that Twitter was fail whaling at the time she cast the spell so people will not be able to vote on Twitter.

*If you don’t have the patience for Luke’s imagination. Vote for the state you don’t want us to go to. If a state receives 24 votes it’s eliminated from the running. Last state standing wins. Luke came up with this idea while watching the hit show Top Shot starring Colby from Survivor.

There are two ways to vote for which direction we travel:
1) On alexandluke.com
2) On Twitter using hashtags

This vote marks the first time that the website vote had one option winning (Arkansas, Missouri, and Iowa), the Twitter vote had the other (Texas), and that the amount of Twitter votes ultimately pushed Texas into the lead. It came down to under 10 votes!

When preparing our next directional vote we realized just how much bigger Texas was than the other States we are currently bordering. It’s bigger in population, it’s bigger in size, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that it’s bigger in popularity.

We have assembled a team of unlikely allies (Arkansas, Missouri, and Iowa) that may have a chance against Texas based on size, population, and attractions. It’s still not an entirely fair fight:

Population
Texas(24,782,302) > Arkansas(2,889,450) + Missouri(5,987,580) + Iowa(3,007,856)

Square Miles
Texas(268,820) > Arkansas(53,179) + Missouri(69,709) + Iowa(56,272)

But, from a voting perspective a vote for either option sends our trip in very different directions. A vote for the Arkansas, Missouri, and Iowa coalition will ultimately send us from the French Quarter in New Orleans all the way to the cornfields of Iowa (with visits to the Ozarks, Hot Springs, and the St. Louis Arch along the way). Or, a vote for Texas sends us through it’s eastern border towards Houston and Austin and with Texas being so big we will need your help to decide which direction to travel next (West vs. North)

Should Arkansas, Missori, and Iowa have listened to the saying “Don’t mess with Texas” a bit more attentively? Vote now to decide.
