Our favourite follower this week is Ed Porras.
Ed has been following and contributing to the alexandluke.com project for the majority of our trip, despite the fact that we didn’t stop in his hometown of Gainesville, Florida. Thankfully Ed didn’t take our skipping Gainesville personally, and has continued to follow along and contribute suggestions on Twitter and Gowalla.
When he saw that we were in New Mexico, he suggested to us 14 of his favourite places in Albuquerque and did it in a way that is a first for us at alexandluke.com! He did it by creating a trip for us on Gowalla. If you aren’t a Gowalla user and want to know what that means, he did the offline equivalent of printing out a map with all of his favourite places marked down on it, and then included descriptions of all the places.
Unlike a conventional map, The Gowalla trip worked with our phone’s GPS and displayed which of Ed’s suggestions were geographically closest to us. Once we knew that, we were able to walk 2 blocks away from our hotel into a restaurant crowded street and easily make the decision to enter the Blackbird Buvette.
While Ed’s performance in creating the trip was fantastic, our performance was pitiful (we only checked into 4 of the 14 spots suggested), but we really appreciate the effort that Ed put in to making this list! If you ever find yourselves in Albuquerque, New Mexico and are looking for a place to eat, drink, see nature, or buy groceries, Consult Ed’s trip. Woah! Alex and Luke! How could you? We didn’t vote you to New Mexico! You don’t get to decide where you go, we do! That’s why we visit your website.
We know, but there is a good reason. Here is what happened: Earlier in the week we realized that we were well past due for service on Burt Reynolds. With this in mind we had plans to get service in Denver, Boulder, or Colorado Springs. Then, we didn’t get service in Denver, Boulder, or Colorado Springs and ended up driving over 800km across the state. While driving through the Great Sand Dunes National Park yesterday we started to freak out when we realized that the next directional vote could potentially leave us with multiple days of driving before we were able to get service.
We stopped in Alamosa, Colorado and contacted our best friends at Oakville Volkswagen and explained that we were in the position described above with Burt, and that we were uncomfortable driving any further than we had to before we stopped for service. We told them that we were in Alamosa, and 12 hours later they had us booked in at the closest service station to us at University Volkswagen in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
People’s suggestions pushed us to an area of Colorado where the only viable option for servicing Burt was to take him south to Albuquerque, New Mexico. We have stopped in Santa Fe on the way and we need your New Mexican suggestions ASAP!
We can’t thank the people at Oakville VW enough. They are not paying us to market for them, we have no contract with them where they help us out with our service and in return we talk about them on our website. They simply sold Luke his first car, and they are looking out for it’s (and our) well being.
