It was another first for us today as we witnessed the official naming ceremony of Carnival’s newest ship, The Carnival Magic. With visions of being huddled around on the pier next to the boat watching as someone smashes a champagne bottle against the hull, we were surprised when the actual ceremony took place in a grand theatre, there was singing and dancing, real live Italian priests and a large button that when pressed signalled a bottle of champagne to be dropped from a rope against the hull of the ship. Oh, and of course, there was some magic performed as well.
It was an impressive ceremony, made even more special by the official Godmother of the Carnival Magic (apparently all ships have Godparents… who knew?) Lindsey Wilkerson, who is an ambassador and former patient of St. Jude Children’s Hospital. She was given the distinct honour of presiding over the ceremony and she even got to press that large button to signal the bottle smashing! Check out the video we took to see what it was really like:
