Life in Iqaluit Nunavut

Posted on December 4th, 2010 in Nunavut, Road Trip, YouTube, favourites by alex

Iqaluit is the capital city of Canada’s newest territory Nunavut, and it’s located on Baffin Island, just west of Greenland.  There are many subtle and not so subtle differences to life in the North, and we thought we would explore and share all the fascinating and quirky things we learned during our trip.

Thanks, guys for moving on this! I’d love to find out more about that school-can’t imagine what happens if there’s a fire!

What language do they speak up there? What was the writing on the signs?

    Hey D. Robert Pease,
The language they speak in Iqaluit is Inuktitut. It’s the official language of Nunavut! There are roughly 35,000 Inuktitut speakers in Canada.

Love the video… Alex, where did you get your red jacket from?

Its a Canada Goose parka – made in Toronto, sold in sporting goods stores. These jackets are hard core – they are worn by scientists in the antarctic and keep you so warm and last forever. We’ll be wearing them all winter at the Balsams in New Hampshire – should keep us warm in the snow!
